These apartments were named after William Augustus Newell and were erected in 1973. Newell was born Sept. 5, 1819, at Franklin, Ohio; died Aug. 8, 1901, at Allentown, NJ; A.B., A.M., LL.D. (Rutgers College, 1836, 1839, 1883), M.d. (University of Pennsylvania, 1839); practiced medicine at Imlaystown and Allentown, NJ; member, U.S. House of Representatives, 1847-51,1865-67; Governor or NJ, 1857-60; Governor of the Washington Territory, 1880-84; Indian Commissioner of the Washington Territory, 1884-86; known as the father of the life-saving service as a consequence of legislation he sponsored in 1848; later appointed Superintendent of the Life Saving Service by President Lincoln; Trustee, Rutgers College, 1873-1901.
